Short-Term Vacation Rental Insurance in Texas
For owners of Airbnb, VRBO, and other short-term rental properties, insurance needs can be shaped by guest injuries, property damage, theft, vandalism, furnishings, business use, and loss of rental income. The policy should reflect how the property, vehicle, business, or activity is actually used.

Why Consider Short-Term Vacation Rental Insurance?
Short-term vacation rentals operate differently from ordinary owner-occupied homes and traditional long-term rentals. Frequent guest turnover, furnished property, business income, and online booking activity can create insurance gaps if the policy was not designed for short-term rental use.
Insurance can help transfer some of these financial risks, but no policy covers every situation. Coverage should be matched to the actual property, operation, vehicle, activity, or professional service involved.
Short-Term Vacation Rental Insurance Coverage Options
The coverage that may be appropriate depends on the specific situation. Options may include some of the following protections.
Dwelling Coverage
Dwelling coverage may help repair or rebuild the insured residence after a covered loss, subject to policy limits and exclusions.
Contents and Furnishings Coverage
Coverage may be available for furniture, appliances, electronics, linens, and other insured property used by guests.
Premises and Host Liability
Liability coverage may help with certain covered guest injuries or third-party property damage claims.
Loss of Rental Income
Coverage may help replace eligible rental income when a covered property loss makes the rental temporarily unavailable.
Platform Coverage Considerations
Protection offered by a booking platform should not automatically be treated as a substitute for a dedicated short-term rental policy.
Short-Term Vacation Rental Insurance FAQs
Will homeowners insurance cover an Airbnb or VRBO rental?
Not necessarily. Homeowners policies may restrict or exclude business or short-term rental activity, so the intended rental use should be disclosed to the insurer.
Do I still need insurance if Airbnb or VRBO provides host protection?
Platform protection should not automatically be treated as a substitute for a property owner’s own insurance. Terms, limits, exclusions, and claims procedures can differ.
Can short-term rental insurance cover damage caused by guests?
Some policies may cover certain guest-caused property damage, but intentional acts, theft, wear and tear, and other losses can be treated differently.
Does vacation rental insurance cover lost rental income?
Loss-of-rents coverage may help replace eligible income when a covered property loss makes the rental temporarily unavailable.
